One of Springfield's best fine dining options is planning to reopen soon with MGM Springfield announcing it will reopen the popular Chandler Steakhouse on Friday, Oct. 2.

Abe Berry, Vice President of Hospitality, told MassLive that the menu will include many of the old favorites at Chandler's, which will be open on Fridays and Saturdays only for the foreseeable future.

The announcement is the latest move by the casino as it continues to expand its entertainment and dining options while maintaining health and safety standards during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Chandler's will join Tap Sports Bar, South End Market and Costa's Pizza, which have been open since July.

MGM Springfield has introduced a new ordering system with diners now able to use their mobile devices to view menus and order food for a touchless experience.

MGM Resorts has been utilizing the casinos' mobile application for checking in as well as being used as a key for rooms at hotels as well. MGM Springfield's hotel is now open on the first floor, but only to M LIfe Reward members currently, and not to the general public. If all goes well with the soft reopening of the hotel the property plans to reopen the full suite of rooms in the coming months.

Berry stressed that the opening of more of the casino is not only in line with the safety guidelines set by the city and state, but also meets MGM's focus on ensuring guests are safe.

"I think as we see each step along the way we're both monitoring the customer demand and health and safety considerations, to make sure we're making the right decisions before we open up the more floors," said Berry.

"Their slow, thoughtful and calculated approach to reopening has helped in building consumer and business confidence. MGM Springfield has followed and adhered to all local public health guidance and protocols," Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno said of the move.

Under Gov. Charlie Baker's reopening plan, the hotel will not be able to provide services to large groups of patrons, therefore making it difficult for the hotel business to be viable.

Springfield's casino will continue to employ the seven-point safety plan that Chris Kelley, president of the Northeast Group, MGM Resorts spoke of in July when the casino first opened. Kelley also oversees Empire City Casino in Yonkers, N.Y., which is set to reopen on Sept. 21.

Kelly told MassLive that the seven-point safety plan that has been developed by an epidemiologist and other health experts that have been advising the resort on how to mitigate the spread of the virus, protect customers, employees and rapidly respond to potential new cases.

Three weeks ago, Springfield native Alize Taylor came back to work for MGM for the first time since the pandemic hit the state.

Alize Taylor

Alize Taylor, of Springfield, works the front desk greeting patrons checking into the hotel at MGM Springfield.

She originally started at the casino on July 21, 2018, when it first opened and later transferred to the hotel to work as a front desk agent. She described the new way of working from when she arrives for her shift.

"The first thing I do when I get to work is sanitize everything," said Taylor. "I'm not here three days out of the week, so I'm not sure who would be behind the desk or touching things in my area. So, the first thing I do is wipe everything down as well as on the other side of the desk as well for the guests."

As she walks into the entrance, Taylor has her temperature checked, part of her new daily routine.

"We're seeing a lot of new technology come out because of the pandemic that's all meant to be contactless and as safe as possible," Berry said.

Along with the hotel reopening a couple of weeks ago, the Regal Cinema and Hannoush Jewelers have also been open with limited capacity.

"I wasn't one of the small percentages of people that decided to vacation during the COVID season," Taylor told MassLive.

She said that during the lockdown that she took the city's advice to heart and "was definitely quarantining," all the while waiting to get back to work.

With the casino and hotel slowly reopening some of the MGM employees who previously lost jobs will be brought back. MGM Springfield laid off 1,000 furloughed employees in late August as part of 18,000 job cuts being made by its parent company nationwide.

Before the pandemic, MGM Springfield had 2,000 employees. In July, it reopened with 800 workers, with plans to call more people in as business ramps back up.

Berry told MassLive that it's still too early to say when more former employees will be hired back as the casino and country are still very much unchartered waters, but said it will be a phased approach.

"We look forward to seeing MGM Springfield strategically reopening," Sarno said of the tactic MGM is taking.

Taylor, for one, is very happy to be back at work and has found the responsibilities to her customers at the hotel crucial.

"It's really just minding your own space and trying to keep yourself and everyone else safe," Taylor added.

Smoking to be banned at Las Vegas Strip casino Park MGM | TheHill - The Hill

Posted: 14 Sep 2020 08:25 AM PDT

The Park MGM casino resort on the Las Vegas Strip will ban indoor tobacco smoking when it reopens later this month, MGM Resorts International officials announced on Monday.

Park MGM will be the first casino along the Strip to fully ban smoking, according to an MGM statement. The property, which includes the NoMad hotel, is one of the last Las Vegas Strip resorts to reopen after the coronavirus pandemic.

Executives made the property, formerly known as the Monte Carlo casino-hotel, smoke-free due to "guest demand," Anton Nikodemus, president of MGM Resorts' Las Vegas Portfolio, said.

"As we looked toward our reopening, we identified an opportunity to be responsive to recurring guest demand for a fully non-smoking casino resort on The Strip," he said in a statement.

Nikodemus told The Associated Press that MGM officials think there is "a high level of pent-up demand" for a nonsmoking casino in Las Vegas. He also said that executives originally considered the idea when the casino resort opened as Park MGM in 2018.

Smoking areas will be available outside of Park MGM, and smoking will be permitted at other nearby MGM Resorts properties.

The decision represents a unique move for a Las Vegas casino, where smoking and secondhand smoke has prompted lawsuits and debate over the years, the AP noted. Advocates had requested a smoking ban when casinos began reopening in June after the coronavirus shutdown, but those demands were not answered.

MGM Resorts noted that access to some Park MGM amenities will be restricted after it reopens on Sept. 30, including the 5,200-seat Park Theater, which will stay closed due to coronavirus bans on crowds.

Park MGM is scheduled to be the last MGM Resorts property in the U.S. to reopen.

Nikodemus noted MGM Resorts properties in other states follow state laws and ban smoking.

It is used in more than 250 cities worldwide by hospitality companies that include Bloomin' Brands, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, MGM Resorts International, Wolfgang Puck and, locally, Momento Hospitality Group, SkyCity Entertainment Group and Matteo Sydney. In June the company completed a USD$50 million Series B funding round.

SevenRooms is currently reviewing sites for its Australian HQ and plans to significantly increase headcount over the coming 12 months. A key focus of local investment will be initiatives that directly support the local hospitality sector, such as partnerships and marketing investments, to help operators adapt and drive growth as lockdowns continue to ease and the economy opens up.

SevenRooms' Australian launch comes at a time when the need for its comprehensive, end-to-end platform has never been greater, with hospitality one of the industries hardest hit by the pandemic.

The hospitality industry has proven to be incredibly resilient, and as it heads towards reopening and recovery, SevenRooms will continue to help hospitality businesses find new ways to connect with their customers to build long-term brand loyalty.
