Just a short flight or few hours drive from Phoenix, Las Vegas is a favorite quick getaway from the Valley.

Yet, if you've never been to Vegas, planning a trip to Sin City can feel a bit like a roll of the dice. What's the best way to get there? How do you choose a hotel? Where should you eat? What should you do? Is it even possible to do Vegas on a budget?

Planning your trip doesn't have to be a gamble. Here are some of the common Las Vegas trip-planning questions we receive from readers and our advice to make sure your experience hits the jackpot.

How do I get there?

It depends on how much you can spend and how much time you want to spend getting there. We've compared all the ways to get to Las Vegas from Phoenix — driving, flying and taking the bus — so you can decide which option works best for you.

How do I decide where to stay?

The Strip is really long and the distance between casinos can be deceiving so if you want to avoid racking up Uber charges, make sure you compare where you plan to hang out with the location of your hotel.

Second, expect to encounter resort fees and parking fees. These daily fees can add up dramatically, so figure them into your cost when choosing a hotel. Some hotels offer free parking, including Wynn and Encore. Also, know that hotel prices will be cheaper midweek than on the weekend.

What are the busiest dates?

Maybe you want to be in Las Vegas when it's really hopping. Maybe you'd rather avoid the crowds and pay a little less for your accommodations. If either scenario applies to you, here are two sets of dates to keep in mind:

March 19-22, 2020: The first rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament are always a busy time in Vegas.

April 23-25, 2020: The NFL Draft is coming to Las Vegas and this weekend will be insane.

Help! I'm on a budget.

Don't worry! There's a lot you can do in Vegas on a budget. From going midweek to searching for deals online before you go, there are many costs you can shave down  and free things you can do by planning ahead.

Where can I eat cheaply?

Using Uber and Lyft

To meet your Uber or Lyft driver at the airport, you'll have to walk to the parking garage, take an elevator to the floor for ride-share pickup and catch your ride from there. It'll take you a few minutes to navigate your way to these spots, which are on Level 2 of the Terminal 1 parking garage and at the valet in Terminal 3.

Hotels and casinos have designated stands for Uber and Lyft. Make sure you enter the correct pickup location when you call for a ride so the driver can pick you up in the right place.
