Manny Pacquiao Vs. Keith Thurman Purse Info And 10 Things You Should Know About Saturday's Fight - Forbes

Posted: 19 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Boxers Manny Pacquiao from the Philippines and Keith Thurman from the USA face off during their weigh-in on July 19, 2019, at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. - The fighters will meet on July 20th in a WBA super world welterweight title fight (Photo by John GURZINSKI / AFP) (Photo credit should read JOHN GURZINSKI/AFP/Getty Images)

The day has finally arrived.

On Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Manny Pacquiao, and Keith Thurman will clash in what could be an epic welterweight battle. On Friday, both men weighed in at 146.5 pounds, and the fight was made official.

Here are the 10 things you need to know about Pacquiao-Thurman.

Start Time

The pay-per-view portion of the event begins at 9 pm ET, but don't expect Pacquiao and Thurman to be in the ring before midnight. There are three fights scheduled ahead of the main event which will push the start time into early Sunday morning.

How To Order on PPV

There are several options to order the fight. You can go through your cable provider to order it, or you can also purchase it via live stream on the FOX PPV app, or FITE TV. The cost should be the same across the board at $74.99 for high-definition in the United States.

The Undercard

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JULY 19: IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant (L) and Mike Lee face off during their official weigh-in at MGM Grand Garden Arena on July 19, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. There are two undercards of sorts.

Earlier in the day, promising Nigerian heavyweight Ife Ajagba faces Ali Eren Demirezen and undefeated IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant will defend his title against unbeaten challenger Mike Lee. This portion of the undercard will be televised on FOX at 7pm ET. After that, things switch to the pay-per-view portion of the show at 9 pm ET.

Sergey Lipinets faces John Molina Jr., Luis Nery battles Juan Carlos Payano and Yordenis Ugas takes on Omar Figueroa Jr. before the Pacquiao-Thurman main event.

Purse Info

According to the fight commission, Pacquiao will earn a guaranteed $10 million and Thurman $2.5 million. However, in reality, both men will earn far more. Pacquiao is believed to be taking home over $20 million and Thurman closer to $8 million for his efforts.

The Odds

According to, Pacquiao is now the -160 favorite with Thurman in as a +140 underdog. A little over a month ago, Thurman was the favorite, but a shift took place once the promotion for the fight kicked into high gear. Some expected we could be looking at an even-money fight by Saturday, but it doesn't appear as though we'll get that.

Titles At Stake

Thurman is the WBA Super World Welterweight Champion while Pacquiao is the WBA Regular Welterweight Champion. This fight will unify the WBA titles.

This is the Biggest Fight of 2019

Aside from unifying the WBA titles, this matchup will determine much more. The winner of this fight could be headed for a showdown with the winner of the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Shawn Porter bout that is scheduled for September 28. Spence is the IBF champion and Porter owns the WBC crown. If the winner of the two fights meet, they could unify three-fourths of the 147-pound title picture.

Beyond that, the fight is also significant because we're moving close to the end of Pacquiao's career. There are only so many performances left for the legend, so whenever he climbs in the ring, he is must-see TV. If he loses, especially by KO, it could spell the end of his career. If he wins, his status as an all-time great grows even more. It would not be an overstatement to say a victory over Thurman at this stage of Pacquiao's career would be his biggest win ever.

The Age Gap

At 40 years old, Pacquiao is a healthy 10 years older than Thurman. It is the largest age gap that Pacquiao has ever had over an opponent. It's part of the reason many fans have some fear about Pacquiao's chances of winning on Saturday night. Few welterweights in history have been able to compete on a championship level into their 40s.

The Talk

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 21: Keith Thurman speaks at a press conference at Gotham Hall in preparation for his fight against Manny Pacquiao on May 21, 2019, in New York City. Thurman has taken it upon himself to turn up the heat as it pertains to trash talk. He's promised to end Pacquiao's career, said that the Filipino icon has T-Rex arms, vowed to crucify him, and in the video below, Thurman says that Pacquiao is not a true welterweight or a technician in the ring.

It seems the trash talk has gotten under Pacquiao's skin a little more than normal. Never one to trash talk himself, Pacquiao did tell me and Forbes' Peter Kahn, that he felt the religious references were a "low blow."

In the end, the banter will likely result in heightened interest for the fight.

What Could Be Next?

We've talked about the possibility of the winner facing the man who emerges victoriously from the Spence-Porter bout, but Pacquiao is still likely holding out hope he can lure Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement for a lucrative rematch. If Pacquiao defeats Thurman, his chances of meeting the level boss in a rematch will increase.
